Empathy is the capacity to understand, to be aware of and sensitive to the circumstances, feelings and sufferings of "the other."
Empathy is a feeling, not an action.
Compassion is movement beyond the feeling of empathy to action to relieve or even personally share in
the suffering of "the other." Compassion is ACTIVE LOVE.
This involves personal sacrifice and even personal suffering.
Unconditional non-judgmental acceptance of the dire situation and circumstances of "the other."
To each and every individual,
each being a child of God,
made in His image and likeness.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. EPHESIANS 4:32
Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. 1 PETER 3:8
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
MATTHEW 5: 3-12 THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
COLOSSIANS 3:12
We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.
The more genuine and the deeper our community becomes, the more will everything else between us recede, the more clearly and purely will Jesus Christ and his work become the one and only thing that is vital between us.
True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.
For you all think God is one who rewards good and punishes evil, but I say to you that God is one who loves you and has compassion for everyone.
Surrender your own poverty and acknowledge your nothingness to the Lord. Whether you understand it or not, God loves you, is present in you, lives in you, dwells in you, calls you, saves you and offers you an understanding and compassion which are like nothing you have ever found in a book or heard in a sermon.
The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the other. The whole purpose of life is to live by love.
To recognize another person is to value them as a person and treat them how a person deserves to be treated.
When two people relate to each other authentically and humanly, God is the electricity that surges between them.
We cannot love God unless we love each other, and to love we must know each other.
If we love each other enough, we will bear with each other's faults and burdens. If we love enough, we are going to light a fire in the hearts of others.
